Osmosis is the movement of water from an area of low solute concentration to one of higher concentration through a semipermeable membrane. Osmosis is a naturally occurring biological process that seeks to equalise the concentration of the solutions on either side of a membrane. It is fundamental to maintaining balance, which is the hallmark of a healthy mouth. We used the principle of osmosis to formulate Osmotonic, an osmotic toothpaste that helps you maintain balance to sustain oral health. The salt crystals in the formula creates a high solute concentration in the mouth. This causes the excess water within inflamed gums to exit the cells in order to balance the concentrations on either side of the gum cell membrane.

Foaming is an important part of the activity of a toothpaste. It helps to loosen stains and bacteria so that they can more easily be removed from the teeth. High-foaming formulas can irritate gums and that’s why we only use mild foaming ingredients in our toothpastes at edel+white. Not only does this reduce irritation, but it also produces a compact foam without large bubbles.
